For many years, Tom was Manager of
Medical Editing Services at the Cleveland Clinic and, later, a
Senior Scientific Writer at the New England Cochrane and
Evidence-Based Medicine Practice Centers. Since 1998, he has
provided consulting and training services in preparing
scientific publications, critical appraisal of clinical
research, statistical reporting, and written communications to a
variety of international clients. He served on the CONSORT,
MOOSE, and PRISMA standards-setting groups, and his book, How
to Report Statistics in Medicine: Annotated Guidelines for
Authors, Editors, and Reviewers, is now a standard reference
in the fields of evidence-based medicine and medical writing.
He received the 1994 Golden Apple Award for Outstanding Workshop
Leader from the American Medical Writers Association; the 2002
Excellence in Continuing Education Award from the American
Statistical Association; and the first Excellence in Teaching
Award from the University of Chicago's Graham School of General
Studies, in 2005. He has taught for the University of Chicago's
Medical Writing Certificate Program since its inception in 1999
and is Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Writing at the University
of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
A
Fellow of the American Medical Writers Association, he is also a
Past President of the Council of Science Editors and Treasurer
of the World Association of Medical Editors. His master's degree
is in Communication Management, from the Annenberg School of
Communication, University of Southern California.
